StyleMachine Lite – General Questions
What version of Live to I need to run StyleMachine Lite?
Live 9.0.1 or higher; however, it must be the 32 bit version. StyleMachine will not run in Live 64 bit version.
Do I need MaxMSP?
StyleMachine needs to launch a Max collective. If you have MaxMSP installed (version 6 or 7), it will launch that. However, you only need Max Runtime (version 6) to use Max4Live.
Does it need the 32 bit version or 64 bit version of Live and/or Max?
StyleMachine needs the 32 bit versions of Max and Live to function. Live has two separate downloads (32 bit or 64 bit), so you may need to download the correct version.
Max can be switched between modes. On Mac, you can do this by selecting the Max application invoking “Get Info” on it (command – I), then selecting “Open in 32-bit mode”.
On Windows, you need to install the 32-bit version of the application.
Can I use StyleMachine in my own session?
StyleMachine Lite sends track data to specific places (i.e. the bass data will be sent to 10th track). Thus, you can insert the Max4Live device into your own session, but generated data cannot be assigned to alternate tracks. You can, of course, substitute your own synthesizers in the templates.
Do I have to pay additional licensing fees if my use of the software ends up on a hit record or other high-profile projects?
No, your original purchase of the software is your only license fee, and you’re free to use it in as many musical recordings as you want, forever.
Do I have to credit the software if I use it on a recording?
No, although it would tickle us if you did.
If the software uses a corpus from existing music, won’t I be breaking copyright by using it?
No. Each part (i.e. kit drums, percussion, bass, synths) is generated individually based upon statistical models of original tracks. Although we cannot guarantee that a few notes of the bass (for example) may have appeared in another piece of music, it is statistically unlikely that those notes will be combined in the same, or even similar, contexts as the original.
Running StyleMachine Lite
How can I play a phrase, or the entire track, without regenerating it?
The round audition buttons to the left of the generate buttons will play either the phrase or the composition as it is, without regenerating it.
On Windows, I get a warning that the app and/or device is attempting to access a network. What is that all about?
The StyleMachine Device and Engine communicate using a local network. Allow access to private networks in the Windows dialog, and you should be fine.
In the Live device, the LED never gets lit after the Engine is launched. Is this a problem?
Yes, it means that the Engine isn’t sending data back to the device, so there are internal network problems.
First, try closing the collective – the device will reopen it in a few seconds.
If that doesn’t fix the problem, try quitting both Live and Max. Launch Max first, then Live, and try opening a template.
StyleMachine uses ports 7000 and 7001 – make sure no other applications are using these ports.
What does the “recalculating” button mean when it appears?
Whenever you select a different member of the corpus from the menu, the StyleMachine Engine needs to recalculate its database. This can take less than a second to almost four seconds. Please be patient, as a lot of numbers are being crunched! Clicking on the yellow button will turn it off if it is stuck.
Sometimes when I try to generate a new composition, it seems to hang. Why is that?
We’ve tried our best to avoid these situations, but sometimes there isn’t enough data in the database to fulfill a particular request, and the Engine chokes. You can tell this has happened if the white progress text (under the clear button) doesn’t display “complete track done!”. If that happens, try pressing the “generate all” button again, or adjusting some of the parameters dials (complexity, density, length), then pressing the “generate all” button again.
What do the numbers v.01.08.15 mean?
Those are version numbers: the date the software was compiled. The latest versions are:
Device: 01.08.15 – click on the Metacreative logo to see the version number.
Where is the manual?
There are Live lessons contained in the templates, explaining the program. Plus, you can find some YouTube walkthroughs here.
